Bairro Alto is a traditional district and one of the most beautiful historic neighbourhoods next to the downtown (Baixa/Chiado) and to the main touristic and nightlife attractions.

The narrow and cobbled streets together with building facades decorated with beautiful tiles, clothes drying, traditional Lisbon lamps and flowerpots make of Bairro Alto a very picturesque place.

Around Bairro Alto, you will find plenty of trendy restaurants serving fresh fish, traditional grocery stores, art galleries, bookshops, stylish alternative fashion shops, pubs and Fado houses.

Bairro Alto invites young people, journalists, writers and students that live door to door with older people. Especially from Thursday to Saturday, Bairro Alto is the perfect stage for many people of different ages, backgrounds and lifestyles that meet each other here standing outside with a drink in hand enjoying this gorgeous night environment.

Chiado is only step ahead. It’s well-known for it’s elegance of bookshops, style cafes, trendy restaurants, art noveau jewellery shops and luxurious international shops that leads to the downtown of the city (Baixa).

On the top of Bairro Alto, there is Principe Real quarter, a cool actual urban chic area known for it’s art galleries, fashion Vintage shops, a biologic market every Saturday morning inside of it’s shady garden and also gay bars are popular.

From a short walking distance you can take the Baixa-Chiado subway (green/blue line) and bus 758, giving you the chance to know the city in deep without a car.

If you have a car, there are 2 underground paid parks, 5 min away by foot.

On 5 min walking distance you can catch the famous tram 28 that crosses other traditional districts as Alfama, Campo de Ourique and Castelo. The famous viewpoints of São Pedro de Alcântara and Santa Catarina are also very close.

Other nice option is to take Elevador da Glória or Elevador da Bica (old funiculars). It worths the short travel!

On the riverside you can rent a bike and enjoy the beautiful view!

The nearer train stations of Cais do Sodré and Restauradores are accessible on 10 min walking distance and lead you to other touristic areas like Carcavelos (watersports) Estoril (casino) Cascais (the Portuguese Riviera) Sintra (UNESCO World Heritage) and Costa da Caparica (beaches).
